Here is a breakdown of some of the terminology that is in use, so you can not only compare the best prices on your preferred TV, but you will also be able to select the perfect model to suit your needs.

Resolution

The resolution of a TV refers to the number of pixels on the screen (the higher the better). Rather than displaying this value, most manufacturers give a text reference to the resolution, and there are a number of different types. In increasing order of quality, these are;

HD Ready

This is the minimum standard for HD TVs, offering a basic high definition quality picture with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (720p). HD Ready is also simply referred to as HD. Quality here is generally ok on a smaller screen or is a good budget friendly option if you’re not too bothered about picture quality.

Full HD

Full HD delivers a sharper and more detailed image compared to HD Ready. This is perfect for most TV sizes and is suitable for streaming, gaming, and Blu-ray movies. It’s still possible to find pretty budget friendly models offering Full HD. Pixel size of Full HD is 1920 x 1080px (1080p)

4K UHD

This is a specific term for, and is used interchangeably with ‘UHD’ (Ultra High Definition). With a resolution of 3840 x 2160, it is incredibly popular in modern TVs. Providing four times the resolution of Full HD, it offers stunning clarity and detail, especially noticeable on larger TVs.

8K UHD

Giving 16 times the resolution of Full HD, 8K UHD delivers an unparalleled level of detail. This is perfect for large-screen TVs and cutting edge content, but it does require compatible 8K sources for full benefit.

Smart TV

Smart TVs come with built-in internet connectivity and apps, to enable access to streaming services, online content, and smart home integration. Features may include voice control, app stores, and compatibility with virtual assistants like Alexa or Google Assistant. Given the popularity of streaming content and apps, Smart TVs are increasingly becoming a necessity.

HDR

HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. This enhances picture quality by delivering a wider range of colors and brightness levels. HDR provides more lifelike images with greater contrast between dark and light areas, making details stand out. Requires compatible content and a TV that supports HDR standards like HDR10 or Dolby Vision.
